§ 9-19. Fire prevention.

  • (a)

    Automatic fire sprinkler systems shall be required in all new commercial construction exceeding ten thousand (10,000) square feet in floor area located in the city.

    (b)

    Automatic fire sprinkler systems shall be required to be installed in existing commercial buildings when any new addition creates an aggregate floor area exceeding ten thousand (10,000) square feet. The aggregate floor area calculation shall include the floor area of the existing building plus the addition. Said automatic fire sprinkler systems shall be required to be installed in the entire building upon determination that the addition has caused the building to exceed the ten thousand (10,000) square foot threshold.

    (c)

    The following structures shall be exempt from the requirements of this section:

    (1)

    Agricultural barns and pole barns;

    (2)

    Residential single-family structures; and

    (3)

    Residential multi-family structures with four (4) or fewer units.

    (d)

    All automatic fire sprinkler systems installed shall be tested, inspected and maintained to the specifications of National Fire Protection Association Standards 13, 13D or 13R, as amended, whichever applies.
